Watching tv how, when, and where you want is still a hassle (at least according to Youtube). Announced yesterday, Youtube TV will be launching in major US markets and is going to give consumers another way to go “unplugged” from cable.
What started as a quiet project within Youtube back in 2012, it eventually became a service that merges the best features of Youtube with live TV streaming.
Notable features of the new streaming service will include an unlimited Cloud DVR service, access to Youtube Red, and up to three concurrent streams on almost any device, all for $35 a month.
- The Cloud DVR service will allow you to record live TV and never have to worry about running out of space again. There is also no limit to the number of shows you can record simultaneously.
- All Youtube TV customers will have access to Youtube Red original series and movies (Youtube Red is normally $9.99 a month).
- Each membership will include up to 6 accounts with each account having an unlimited DVR storage. However, each membership will be limited to three concurrent streams. Youtube TV will work on almost any device including Android or IOS mobile devices, tablets, computers, and Google Chromecast.
According to TechCrunch, Youtube TV will launch in markets where they can offer a full local channel lineup. Initial launch cities will include Philadelphia, New York, and LA.
YouTube Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl of YouTube TV explained that membership will include “comprehensive national coverage with ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox all included”. The initial lineup will offer more than 40 networks. Kyncl also said services could be added to the lineup at a later time as they are “always in conversations” with partners.
Youtube will be going up against other streaming tv services like Comcast, Sling, Verizon, and DirecTV Now.
